Title: Characterisation and CPUE analyses for barracouta (Thyrsites atun) in BAR 1, 1989–90 to 2013–14.
FAR-2016-37-BAR-1-characterisation.pdf (20.8 MB)
Barracouta (Thyrsites atun) catches from the east coast South Island account for 86% of the total BAR 1 catch for 1990–2014, mainly from bottom trawls in under 250 m depths. Annual BAR 1 catches from bottom and midwater tows were close or over the TACC of 11000 t (at 9000–11500 t) for 2009–14 (similar to the volume caught in the late 1990s). For the east coast South Island, an increasing trend was apparent after 2008 in the small vessel, bottom trawl CPUE and in the trawl survey biomass indices.

Title: Review of QMS species for inclusion in the east coast South Island winter trawl survey reports.
5869064-FAR-2013-35-Review-of-QMS-species-for-inclusion-in-the-east-coast-South-Island-winter-trawl-survey-reports.pdf (12.9 MB)
Twenty candidate QMS species, excluding the target species, were reviewed and recommendations made on which species and outputs should be included in all future survey ECSI winter trawl survey reports. The following species should be included: barracouta, lemon sole, ling, rough skate, smooth skate, school shark, rig, and silver warehou.

Title: Fishery characterisation and standardised CPUE analyses for barracouta, Thyrsites atun, (Euphrasen, 1791) (Gempylidae),1989–90 to 2007–08
12_12_FAR.pdf (18.0 MB)
This report includes a description of all New Zealand barracouta fisheries catches up to the fishing year 2007–08; development of catch-per-unit-effort models for the three main fisheries (east and west coasts of the South Island and Southland); a summary of observer size frequency data; a summary of trawl survey biomass and size frequency data; and a review of stock structure. It makes recommendations on future data requirements and methods for monitoring the stocks.
